Izumi Hoshina’s Fusing Glass Exhibition - Reflections & Inspirations

Izumi Hoshina’s exhibition was a rousing success.  Using the Yamaboshi Gallery & Cafe provided an excellent frame for displaying her pieces of glass art.  Yamaboshi is home to an intimate gallery which allows the visitors to appreciate the art at their own pace rather than rush through the experience without digesting the artistic inspirations on display.  And the cafe component of the Yamaboshi Gallery allows potential patrons of the arts to enjoy a refreshing coffee or tea with handcrafted light fare as they consider taking a one of a kind piece of glass art home with them.

The name of the exhibition “Fusing Glass - Ring Ring Ring” paid homage to one of the greatest influences on her own artistic expression, Mr. Klaus Moje.  Before opening her workshop in Echizenhama, Niigata, Izumi attended a seminar led by Moje when he was director of the Canberra School of Art in Australia.  His groundbreaking work in glass art affected Izumi so profoundly that her art was forever changed, and her pieces at the Yamaboshi Gallery reflect this lasting impression.  Moje pioneered a program using fusing and coldworking techniques as its core, and that type of glass art creation is what Izumi’s exhibition was all about.  Izumi stands on the shoulder of a giant reconceptualizing techniques she learned while studying at Moje’s workshops and adapting them for her own glass art pieces.  The level of intricacy and detail in Izumi’s art is breathtaking, and she is very happy to have had the chance to share it with the artist community of Niigata.  In 2022, she is planning on taking her glass art and tableware abroad to hold galleries in Europe in countries like Germany, the United Kingdom, and Italy among others.
