A Hokkaido nature photography tour with JDS Photography Workshop Leader offers more than incredible wildlife—it’s a journey into Japan’s rich cultural past. Alongside photographing snow monkeys (Macaca fuscata) and Red-crowned cranes (Grus japonensis), participants will step into history at one of Japan’s most iconic landmarks: Matsumoto Castle, also known as Karasujo (Crow Castle) for its dramatic black exterior and soaring wing-like towers. Originally built in 1504 and completed in 1594, Matsumoto Castle is one of just 12 original samurai castles that still stand today. This National Treasure provides not only stunning photo opportunities, but also a deep cultural experience. During the visit, our JDS workshop leader shares the castle’s story, from its strategic importance in the Sengoku era to its preservation and national recognition in the 20th century.
JDS Japan photography workshops are thoughtfully designed to immerse photographers in both nature and culture. The first day doesn't begin in a Tokyo hotel, but at Mt. Fuji, with a sunset shoot and welcome dinner. On day two, golden hour photography continues at Fuji-san, followed by a stop at Japan’s most revered Shinto shrine, and then on to Matsumoto Castle, before arriving at the snow monkey park in Nagano. Participants also enjoy rare access to a private Buddhist sanctuary, where the group is welcomed by the third-generation abbot. Through a long-standing friendship, the JDS workshop leader arranges for private viewings of ancient scrolls and sacred artifacts—national treasures not open to the public.
Matsumoto Castle itself was famously overtaken and fortified by Takeda Shingen, the revered “Tiger of Kai.” Known for his military brilliance and deep connection to his people, Takeda Shingen remains a legendary figure in Japanese history. Though he died before reaching Kyoto, many historians consider him one of Japan’s great unifiers, alongside Tokugawa Ieyasu and Oda Nobunaga.
For those passionate about both photography and history, the blend of storytelling, cultural depth, and stunning landscapes makes this experience unforgettable. Many guests choose to extend their trip with a private JDS Japan photo workshop, exploring additional historic sites like Nikko, Kagoshima, and the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. From the majestic presence of Mt. Fuji to the untamed beauty of Hokkaido’s wildlife, this is more than a photo tour—it’s a cultural adventure in comfort and style. With exclusive access, expert historical insights, and unforgettable moments, guests return home with more than just incredible images—they return with insights in Japanese folklore.
