Each autumn, Japan transforms into a living canvas—vivid foliage, ancient temples, mystical scenery, and enduring traditions abound. The Japan Dreamscapes Photography Association welcomes you to step beyond the ordinary and experience the full brilliance of Japanese autumn through our immersive workshops and tours. Here’s a glimpse of the memorable moments awaiting you in some of Japan’s most captivating regions.
Nikko: Sacred Shrines & Autumn Splendour
Our adventure begins in Nikko, home to the revered Toshogu Shrine—a UNESCO World Heritage Site where Shinto and Zen Buddhist sanctuaries are cradled by crimson maple slopes. Dawn brings tranquil opportunities to photograph the iconic Shinkyo Bridge and the shrine’s exquisite carvings. From there, we venture into the highlands to capture the power of Kegon Waterfall and the serene charm of Lake Chuzenji, both radiant in autumn’s embrace. Evenings are filled with camaraderie, savory local cuisine, and the restorative warmth of onsens.

Fukushima Highlands: Misty Lakes & Storybook Sunrises
In the Fukushima Highlands, ethereal lakes shimmer in the golden dawn, shrouded in mist and framed by fiery leaves. This region, a favourite test ground for top camera brands, offers endless inspiration: from fogbound islands that seem to float in the sky to secret samurai battlegrounds and dragon waterfalls. The landscapes here are so magical that they’ve become a staple for returning clients seeking new perspectives each season.

Sea Stacks & Coastal Wonders: Pilgrimage to the Sea of Japan
Crossing the country, our workshops follow ancient pilgrimage routes toward the Sea of Japan. Along the way, we pass through ancient villages, mossy shrines, and alpine peaks. The journey culminates at dramatic sea stacks, where golden hour light bathes the sculpted coastlines of Yamagata and Akita. Here, long exposures reveal the surreal interplay of waves and rock, while the setting sun delivers unforgettable photographic opportunities.

Niigata: Koi Ponds & Rice Terraces
Niigata’s highlands surprise with koi ponds nestled alongside rice terraces—hidden gems accessible only through local connections. As the chill of autumn sets in, the prized nishikigoi carp are relocated from natural ponds to indoor sanctuaries, offering rare photo opportunities. The region’s rice terraces, known as the ‘valley of the dragons,’ mirror morning clouds and golden light, creating dreamlike scenes that capture the essence of rural Japan.

Akiyamago: Samurai’s Refuge in Alpine Wilderness
Deep in Niigata and Nagano lies Akiyamago, a secluded alpine borderland steeped in samurai legend. Here, autumn paints the mountains in reds and golds, and ancient traditions endure. The treacherous roads lead to sacred Zen sanctuaries and hidden valleys—once havens for ronin, now a photographer’s dream. Workshops in this region blend history, nature, and the meditative practice of forest bathing, revealing landscapes unchanged for centuries.

The Sea of Clouds: Unkai Magic
No autumn journey is complete without witnessing Japan’s unkai—the fabled sea of clouds. Before dawn, we ascend mountain passes to watch fog drift among ancient cedars and peaks. As sunlight spills across the landscape, the world below disappears into a celestial sea, evoking the poetry and spirituality at the heart of Japanese culture. These moments, shared with fellow photographers, become cherished memories and portfolio highlights.

Chichibu: Temples, Ginkgo Avenues, and Pre-dawn Mystique
Our route winds to Chichibu, where 34 ancient temples and golden ginkgo avenues await. Early mornings reward us with the city’s legendary sea of clouds—mist rolling between mountain peaks as the first light paints the sky. Between photo sessions, we savor lavish breakfasts and explore the city’s hidden corners, finding inspiration at every turn.

Mt. Fuji: The Ultimate Autumn Icon
The grand finale is Mt. Fuji, Japan’s most iconic peak. Workshops here embrace both the famous and the secret: from the celebrated Fuji Five Lakes (and the little-known sixth, Lake Tanukiko) to hidden vantage points known only to seasoned guides. Each day starts before dawn, capturing Fuji’s reflection in tranquil waters, and ends with camaraderie and shared triumphs. Autumn here is a riot of color—crimson, gold, and even rare purple maples—set against the majestic backdrop of the mountain’s snow-capped cone.
