Photographing Onuma Quasi National Park

Hokkaido is home to incredible amounts of natural beauty.  Southern Hokkaido is no different.  Photographing and enjoying Onuma Quasi National Park is more commonly associated with photo tours hosted in the spring and summer with the lush greenery and picturesque landscapes.  However, your Japan Dreamscapes (JDS) Photography Tour Leader knows the hidden value of Onuma Quasi National Park in the winter.

Winter landscapes are different yet equally appealing to their summer and spring counterparts, and the photos ops provided from the connection of the ‘Onuma’ the larger body of water in the national park and ‘Konuma’, the smaller body of water in the park is a small islet frequently used by migratory birds.  Mallards and White-tailed eagles are common sights at Onuma Quasi National Park, but being Hokkaido, many other species of birds also visit the park and will be available for you to photograph them.

Standing at the lakeside, you can also enjoy Mt. Komagatake capped in snow.  It is a Hokkaido Winter Photo Tour’s rival to the iconic Mt. Fuji.  Mt. Komagatake is also an active volcano, so the contrast of seeing it coated in snow makes for an even more stark contrast as you photograph it as the backdrop in your once in a lifetime winter landscape photos while enjoying a photo workshop with JDS.
