While organizing and cataloging photos from a recent Hokkaido Photo Tour, the JDS workshop leaders noticed something extraordinary. On the top row of their collection were stunning landscapes capturing Hokkaido’s enchanting winter wonderland: glistening snow, dramatic mountains, and serene frozen lakes. Beneath these, rows of wildlife moments came to life—majestic Steller’s Sea Eagles (Haliaeetus pelagicus), White-tailed Eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla), graceful Red-crowned Cranes (Grus japonensis), majestic Ezo Sika Deer (Cervus nippon yesoensis), and elusive Ezo Red Foxes (Vulpes vulpes schrencki).

One image stood out in particular: a lone Steller’s Sea Eagle (Haliaeetus pelagicus) gazing intently out of frame. Beneath it, the carefully curated Hokkaido landscapes aligned almost poetically. The workshop leaders couldn’t help but wonder, What was this eagle seeing?

With over 20 years of experience in Hokkaido wildlife and landscape photography, the JDS workshop leaders delved deeper into the scene, considering the eagle’s perspective. Inspired by this moment, they revisited the landscape shots with fresh eyes, adopting a “Beginner’s Mindset.” They examined every detail as if seeing Hokkaido for the first time—the jagged crevices of snow-covered peaks, the soft glow of light reflecting off icy surfaces, and the untouched tranquility of Hokkaido’s wilderness.

Hours passed as they immersed themselves in the artistry of these scenes. When stepping back from their work, they reflected on how connected they felt to this breathtaking region—just like the eagle, deeply observant and fully engaged with its surroundings.
